What Is Sankalpa?

It formally connects you to the ritual and declares its intention to the cosmic order.
Components of Sankalpa
A traditional sankalpa includes:
Time Identification: - Current year in various calendar systems - Month, fortnight (paksha), tithi - Day of the week, nakshatra - Current planetary positions
Location Identification: - Geographic location of the ritual - Sometimes includes larger geographic context
Personal Identification: - Your full name - Gotra (ancestral lineage) if known - Your birth star (janma nakshatra)
Purpose Declaration: - The specific puja being performed - The intended benefit or purpose - Any specific desires or wishes

If You Don't Know Your Gotra
Many people, especially those raised outside traditional settings, don't know their gotra. This is accommodated by using: - A universal gotra (Kashyapa gotra is sometimes used) - Your birth nakshatra as identifier - Other traditional alternatives
Not knowing your gotra doesn't prevent effective puja.
